Graphic design by diy, please just don’t

Why shouldn’t you undertake some graphic design DIY, it’s cheaper surely? Well yes, it is cheaper but don’t call me Shirley.  The thing is, unless you know what you are doing, you shouldn’t apply DIY to anything; you can just make things worse.

It’s like deciding that you are going to fit a gas fire yourself when you aren’t qualified. Just because you can, that doesn’t mean that you should. You’ll hire a professional, because that’s what they do. Why DIY your branding when you run the risk of damaging it? Hire a professional.

Your brand is your proverbial shop window and if it isn’t done correctly then people are just going to walk on by. The overall look and feel of your brand is what people are going to base their initial opinions on, so don’t even consider going the graphic design DIY route. Ever. Please.

Some things require a professional touch, your graphic design is one of them.

Avoid the graphic design DIY temptation

We can all get a little too close to our own brands sometimes, and we don’t always see it the way that a professional designer would. At Geeky Designs we consider the target audience, the design, marketing strategy, colours, the broader picture and we do so as outsiders with a more critical eye than the business owner themselves.

This type of approach can make all the difference. This is true for all kinds of businesses, take novelist for instance. It’s not often that a novelist will even edit their own book, let alone design the cover. The novelist is good at the writing and leave the design to the professionals, otherwise they aren’t going to sell a single copy regardless of how good the actual writing may be.

There is also the very good chance that you don’t have the right tools for the job. Professional graphic designers use professional software suites on hand.

The cost effectiveness of hiring a professional

As already stated, graphic design DIY is cheaper… but only for the short term. Thinking of the longer view, it is going to be much more expensive. Shoddy or off target branding design is going to cost you business, there’s no two ways about it.

The better your graphic design, the better your branding, the better your chances of landing sale after sale. It’s not rocket science, but you’d be surprised at just how many people just seem to realise how important and cost effective professional graphic design can be.

That being said, there’s no need for these services to be costly either. You only need to take a look at our pricing plans for proof of that. Graphic design DIY? It just isn’t worth losing business and revenue over, is it?

The importance of picking the right domain name

It’s important to choose the right domain name for your website, this is because it represents your brand online and creates an impression of who you are. A clever domain name can have a huge influence on the way visitors are attracted to your website. If your domain name does not reflect what you do though, then you may well struggle to attract the right type of visitor and you may find it affects your ranking.

Your URL is just one of many factors that search engines look at, so getting it right is going to be important.

Think like a site visitor

If we are honest, Coco Cola will never need to register the domain “FizzyCola.com” will they? Their brand is so strong now that simply typing in cola is going to place their name right at the top of search engines. Maybe your brand is strong too, but it is not likely to be that strong because most people are not in the position of having years of costly branding campaigns that make them the number one in their industry.

Another example of naming your domain with searchers in mind would be if you ran a campsite in Snowdonia. A domain like “SnowdoniaCampsite.co.uk” is likely going to do you better in SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages) than something like “MountainView.co.uk”.  People are more likely to tap something like ‘Snowdonia campsites’ into their favourite search bar, so it just makes sense to have your domain structured in a similar fashion.

But you have already bought a domain that does not match your business?

It is not the end of the world and many other site owners have done remarkably similar. You can always wait for search engines and visitors to find you. In the meantime, work on your branding, overall SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and social media presence. These steps are highly recommended even if your domain name is perfect.

If like many others you do not have the time or skills to do these things in-house, we have SEO, branding and many other services that you can take advantage of including SEO friendly writing offers. Our highly skilled team has been nailing results for our customers for a number of years and we are just a message away from helping you too.

Do not forget about the extension

As well as choosing the right domain name, you also need to choose the correct extension. The extension is the letters after the ‘dot’. Generally speaking, we would recommend staying away from the newer extensions like ‘.xyz’, ‘.pizza’, ‘.bargains’ or ‘.beer’. It is usually a good idea to just stick to the ones that people know and trust.

.Com is the normal, natural choice for US and some UK based businesses while .co.uk or .uk is the natural choice for UK based businesses. Choosing the correct one is going to send a subtle message that your site and business is trustworthy and authentic.

As a side note, whatever domain name and extension you eventually go for you should keep in mind that you should also grab an SSL certificate too.

A properly designed email signature

Email personalisation goes far beyond ‘just’ tailoring emails to the recipient. A signature also goes a long way in driving engagement between brand and customer. An email signature can be seen as handing over a business card every time you send an email.

Email signatures are very visually engaging and it is much better to send and email with a properly constructed signature than without. The signature is a highly useful tool and they are fairly straightforward to implement – depending on your provider – but it’s probably best to let a professional design it.

4 reasons why personalised email signatures are important

There are a lot of reasons ‘why’ but we have decided to be kind and whittle them down to the top four for you.

Creating an email signature is an ideal opportunity to put your brand on every single message that you send out to customers, prospective customers and partner companies. Basically, consistent branding reinforces who you are as a business.

  • Acts like a digitised business card

A personalised (as opposed to simply a basic signoff) email signature is in effect your business card.  You should see it as you are conveying the idea that you are open to communication.

  • Personal association

If you are something of a one-man band, as in you yourself are your brand, then it’s likely that you don’t have a logo.  If that is the case, a photo of yourself is going to allow the recipient to make a personal association and connection.

  • Quick links for accessibility

Have a good think about the things you might want to make easy to access for the people you are sending emails to. this could be links to WhatsApp, social channels, phone numbers…

You are holding the keys to success

The following is why branded email signatures are important for the success of your company as a whole and not just for communication and engagement.

Brand Consistency

Keeping email signatures ‘on brand’ is a key element of helping to ensure company success. You should make sure that the colours and the logo that you are using in the signature are the same as the ones that you are using everywhere else: website, business cards, advertisements, brochures etc.

Company Consistency

All of your employees should be using the same layout for their email signatures and this of course includes logo and colours. This way, every outgoing email is branded correctly, regardless of who sends it.

Legal Disclaimers

Company emails these days are meant to have disclaimers attached, depending on your business.  Copyright notices, information regarding confidentiality etc. putting these details in your signature ensures that every email contains your legal disclaimers.

Keep your signature simple

Your email signature should be kept as simple as possible while still including all of the relevant information. All you really need are:

  • Name
  • Position
  • Phone number
  • Email
  • Website
  • Logo
